Stamford, CT - Janitor Saves Boys
Life Ten-year-old Isiah Butler, a student at a Magnet school in Stamford, CT collided with another student on the playground, sustaining an impact to his chest that caused him to sustain a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Janitor Gerard Sangerman, who has experience as a firefighter, initiated CPR while an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) was rushed to the scene. Together, Sangerman and school nurse Thomasina Smikle were able to restart Isiah's heart. He is recovering at Yale-New Haven hospital. (Photo courtesy WTNH-TV8)
Assistant Principal and School Coaches Saves 11-Year-Old's Life September, 2008 -
Atlanta, Georgia Finding Bernardo unresponsive and without a pulse, they quickly attached an A.E.D. which had been installed in the school. The machine advised that a shock was indicated, and within seconds, Bernardo was breathing again. Hospital tests revealed that Bernardo suffered from an enlarged heart, and an automatic implanted defibrillator was surgically installed. Bernardo has recovered fully.
6-Year-Old Saved with Defibrillator at School In September of 2008, 6-year-old Texas kindegarten student Emiliano Vela fell unconscious to the floor and began to turn blue. The school's nurse, along with a physical education teacher, grabbed a recently-installed AED (Defibrillator) from its mount in the gymnasium and applied the pads to Emiliano's chest. Within seconds, the machine instructed the rescuers to administer a shock. With the push of a button, Emiliano's heartbeat was restored. The youngster was treated at a local hospital and fully recovered.
AED at Church saves man's life In early November of 2008, Michael Moore was teaching an English-as-a-second-language class at a church parish in Greensboro, Georgia. When he suddenly collapsed in front of his students, an off-duty nurse started to perform CPR, while another parishioner ran to get the AED that had been purchased by the parish. The defibrillator pads were applied to Michael's chest, and the machine advised that a shock was needed. With one push of a button, Michael's heartbeat was restored. He fully recovered.
The manager and front-desk manager at the Rancho Bernardino, California Swim and Tennis club used an AED to save the life of an 80-year-old tennis player at the club. The man had collapsed on the tennis court and CPR was started by trained bystanders. The managers rushed an AED to the scene, and following the voice prompts of the AED, administered life-saving shocks to restore the man's heartbeat. The city had purchased 23 AED's for placement in public buildings throughout the community, and this one saved a life.
